A Comprehensive Medical Assistance Concept
A Comprehensive Medical Assistance Concept

As a world cruiser designed and capable to reach the most remote regions of the planet, the SY Alithia implemented a sophisticated remote medical assistance system.

In cooperation with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and a specialist doctors team a comprehensive state-of-the-art remote medical assistance concept for off shore passage and remote sites was conceived and implemented. The work included medical risk assessment for seafarer, analysis of medical, technical and organizational requirements, development of typical frequent and emergency cases, planning of the vaccination program and the onboard pharmacy, identification and contracting of a global medicine consultancy and evacuation service provider.

The Yacht has two paramedics trained in emergency medicine permanently onboard and is equipped with a very advanced medical assistance infrastructure.

A patient room of the vessel is equipped with a Propaq vital signs monitor, suction unit, defibrillator, oxygen concentrator and video camera. A stretcher allows immobilization up to helicopter evacuation.

Two bundled high data speed INMARSAT satellite links (128 kb) deliver the real time vital signs monitor data and maintain a video conferencing link with a telemedicine contractor in a Sydney and Johannesburg alarm centre.

A team of doctors provides 24 hours a day and 365 days a year telemedicine and medical consultancy services in English language throughout the world to the two paramedics onboard the vessel. They assist the paramedics in non-emergency medical issues (e.g. prophylaxis), in diagnosis and in routine or emergency medical treatment. In addition pediatrician and other specialist consultancy is available around the clock within 30 minutes by phone and 4 hours at the alarm centre upon request.

The Team of doctors has full medical records of guests, crew and staff and of the composition and stocking levels of the onboard pharmacy. The alarm center organizes - in case of need - the speedy evacuation of a casualty via the quickest means possible, e.g. helicopter, sea plane or military craft and ambulance flight to the next adequate hospital and the follow up of medical treatment.

With the telemedicine concept, expert advice and support is available anytime and anywhere on the planet.
